Cannabinol (CBN)

Cannabinol (CBN) is a minor cannabinoid resulting from THC oxidation. Marker of aging hemp, currently studied for its potential properties.

    Cannabinol (CBN)

Cannabinol (CBN) is one of the minor cannabinoids of Cannabis sativa L. It results mainly from the oxidative degradation of THC under the combined effect of time, light, heat and oxygen. It was the first cannabinoid isolated , in 1899 by Wood, Spivey and Easterfield.

    Chemistry and formation

CBN is formed by oxidation of THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) , then of THC. This is a slow non-enzymatic process: in fresh hemp the CBN content is very low (< 0.5%); it increases gradually with aging of the plant or extract.

A high CBN content in a CoA (Certificate of Analysis) is therefore an age or oxidation marker of the lot — useful information for evaluating freshness.

    Pharmacological properties

Research on CBN is more limited than on CBD or THC, but several axes are explored:

    - CB1 and CB2 receptor binding : moderate, much less than THC. - Slight psychoactive effect : research suggests an effect 4 to 10× weaker than that of THC, debated. - Sedative effect : popular claim, scientific data still mixed. - Antibacterial properties : in vitro studies on resistant bacterial strains.

⚠️ As with all cannabinoids, no therapeutic claim is authorized in France outside of approved medicines (none for CBN to date).

    Legal status

In France, CBN is not classified as a narcotic . It is found in trace amounts in legal hemp products (THC ≤ 0.3%). Some companies offer CBN extracts targeted as 'sleep' supplements — these claims are unregulated.

In the United Kingdom , CBN is on the list of cannabinoids controlled at the 1 mg/finished product threshold (FSA Novel Food framework).

    Practical use

    CBN appears in:

    - Aging hemp (natural CBN, batch indicator) - CBN-enriched oils marketed as sleep supplements - CBN-enriched gummies — banned in France since 15 May 2026 (DGAL plan)

    CBN vs CBD : differences
